Steve's Infinite Jest Utilities Page

Amazon.com | Back Bay (Little, Brown)

Created: sometime shortly after 18OCT98 (Nov. '98 perhaps?)
Last modified: 04AUG22 (a very accidental1 second attempt2 at a
very long-overdue second reading has indeed concluded,
which means new thoughts will occur and demand inclusion here.
If you've been here before you can see several already have.)

(1 In mid-March a buddy shared a photo of his son mugging for the camera, which photo so resembled the photo I used in 2008 to win a DFW poster contest that I immediatley grabbed IJ for what normally would be my every-other-year-or-so reading of the Admissions Interview and Eschaton chapters...but then whaddaya know, upon finishing the former I just kept right on trucking with the Erdedy-Pining-For-His-Dealer chapter. I was not really a fan of this chapter during my first reading, but as I am now 57 years old—I was 33 when I first read the book—I have the kinds of related experiences which are almost unavoidable over such a long stretch of well-lived life. Yeah that chapter hit differently this timea; I will probably add it to my every-couple-of-years rotation along with the other two!)
a As did, as you might imagine and I was sure anticipating, the Boston AAs thing, p343-375. [25JUN22. And now the Men's Meeting scene (pp795-808)—which
I KNOW was published as a short story somewhere but now can't recall where!—how could this section have left me so flat back in '98?? This time I'm howling!]

(2 I aborted my first re-read back in 2018 and the real question for me now is not 'why did I bail after only a hundred pages' (most likely I was distracted by another book) but 'why have I not even the slightest memory of that 2018 attempt?' No kidding: if I hadn't made date/time notes upon completing chapters? I'd never have even recalled—or believed you if you told me—that I'd done it. Although, I did just admit to being 57...)

MASSIVE SPOILERS ENSUE, BE APPRISED AND WARNED.
(All pagination mentioned here holds for the hardcover and paperback editions.)

1. Chapter Thumbnails. Infinite Jest's chapters and sub-chapters are typically separated by a quadruple space. I scribbled these thoughts on a note pad during my first, and to date only (I'm embarrased to say, though this may be changing: see above) reading from 21AUG98 to 18OCT98, and they were intended to make things easier for *moi*. Will they work for you? Who knows. Different readers invariably cull different relevancies from identical text; these snippets may seem utile (thus this page's title) or ludicrous. Likely both.

Chris Swingley has formatted the thumbnails to a two-sided bookmark: pdf format. (May 2022: This is proving quite handy with this second reading, but the more I tweak this page the more I can see that the REAL value of Swingley's bookmark will be as a snap-shot of the 1st version of these notes.) (07JUN22: I completely take that back; snap-shot or not, this sucker has proven itself indispensable during this read! I'm checking it numerous times every time I sit down with the book! I wanted to shoot Mr Swingley a thank you but in the fifteen years since he shared it, I've lost his email!)

2. Endnote Tag Finder. Here are the main text page, paragraph and line locations of the 388 endnote tags...for those who peruse the endnotes with the same vigor as they do the main narrative.

3. Some of the endnotes have end- and footnotes of their own.

4. Concavity Map. (click to enlarge)

I was pretty sure Greg Carlisle had something like this somewhere in his excellent guide to Infinite Jest, Elegant Complexity (I can't recommend Carlisle's book enough, though as you'll see below, I do try) but sans index and after lots of flipping, I guess not. (Though there's always this!) Anyway, I drew the lines with info from Infinite Jest on pages 93, 403 and 438.
    • Page 93 states that Rome, NNY (new New York), Glens Falls, NNY, and Beverly, MA are all "border metropolises."
    • On page 403 "historic and now hideously befouled Ticonderoga, NY" (not NNY, notice) is mentioned as being located at the "near-right-angle" of the concavity.
    • On page 438, large concavity walls are described as being located "south of what used to be Syracuse, Concord, NH and Salem, MA."
[6/15/22: Or...maybe just read the three lines at the botton of p399? Duh.]

What remains unclear to me is to what the appellative N of the "new" states refers. At first I thought all the "new" states were newly Canadian, but the fact that Glens Falls, NNY is about 60 km south of Ticonderoga, NY smothers that hypothesis in its sleep.

1. . Infinite Jest Online Index. My second time through Infinte Jest I was planning to index the sucker, but Tim Ware beat me to it. (Thank GOD!)

2. http://www.smallbytes.net/~bobkat/jesterlist.html Bob Wake's Infinte Jest Page. After finishing "Infinite Jest" I clamored for anything by and about DFW. Bob's page is the motherlode for DFW reviews, interviews and writings. (This is not an exaggeration. Almost everything that has been written about Wallace and/or his writing is available here, not to mention four or five jacket photos.) [Yes, this link is indeed dead, but the next link, Nick's HOWLING FANTODS, is basically what I just described: the go-to for DFW info and especially IJ info. As is, also, the Wiki farther down at #5.]

When the guy who did this page was doing this page (can't remember the name, sorry!), he emailed and politely asked if he could use my chapter thumbnails. I said sure. He explained what he was doing at the time but I evidently was not paying attention because I had no clue this sort of page-by-page, very cool, IJ companion would be the result! Thankfully he edited the thumbnails for simplicity, accuracy, and of course taste. [4/2/22. I looked but I can't even find my thumbnails on there any more. Whew! ]

June 1988 AN OLD PHOTO

5/3/2001. Just found this. It's from Playboy, June 1988, bottom of page 3. "Late Night" was, by a very long shot the first Wallace story I read (I didn't read IJ until 1998) and I must have read the author's name at the time since I liked the story quite a bit, but the name didn't stick. I didn't make any connection until, upon completion of Infinite Jest and A Supposedly Fun Thing and Broom Of The System, I was perusing Girl With Curious Hair in Barnes & Noble. I offhandedly had begun reading the story titled "My Appearance"...recognition of the first sentence was instantaneous, as was a clear memory of Nick Backes's unforgettable illustration of Letterman leaning forward—almost over his desk—toward a poised but chary blond actress. I think I said, more loudly than was probably appropriate for the location: "I'LL BE DAMNED!"

4/2/2017. Added a much better scan of the DFW-as-pup image, as well as images of both Mr. Backes and his aforementioned work.

CHAPTER THUMBNAILS

Not that it isn't obvious, but all 28 chapters—as well as any sections of text significant enough to have an all-capped title (and even some without titles, I now discover)—are identified here by the page on which they begin, with the chapters being indicated here—as in the book—by that shadowed circle glyph, ❍. (Note: Greg Carlisle's book Elegant Complexity, mentioned and linked earlier, explains the whole chapter/section thing nicely, and is recommended unreservedly, as is, if you're looking for scene spotters, Keith O'Neill's IJ guide. I often prefer Mr O'Neill's notes to my own (I sometimes got a little too cute, which was fun at the time, but a couple are, as folks sometimes say these days, kinda cringe, though in my own defense, O'Neill's isn't flawless: his note on the p65 section wherein Orin and fellow Cardinals are paragliding into Mile High stadium is "Orin at football practice." So, as ever: caveats, salt grains, etc.)

Oh and also, HUGE SPOILER ALERT. Yeah this is for people who've read the book and need some clarification.
